This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. It is the day the disciples and close followers of Jesus were together in the upper room waiting for the gift he had promised. The fulfillment of Christ’s promise of the Holy Spirit takes place during the Jewish harvest festival, Pentecost, which means fiftieth and is celebrated on the fiftieth day after the Passover, also the fiftieth day after Jesus’ death on the cross. These first followers of Jesus Christ, including his mother and siblings, were given this blessed gift of the Holy Spirit. They encountered God intimately and with joy. We too are given the Holy Spirit to continue the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ in the world today.
